Eleven-year-old Hans is competitive about everything. Whatever he does, he wants to excel. So, it was no surprise when his class held a fundraising event to help disaster victims that he was motivated to raise the most money. But, Hans’ dad says, “It was a problem for him because the fundraising involved selling and this is something that Hans isn’t too keen on. He didn’t like the idea of going door-to-door soliciting, even though he was passionate about the cause. It was just a matter of knowing how to handle different situations that might arise when he went to a stranger’s door.”

Hans’ father helped him develop a mental rehearsal that built his confidence for selling. “It didn’t take us long to create the mental rehearsal. Then he practiced it every day for about 2 weeks before the fundraiser began and every day during it as well. I think it made a difference because Hans sold more magazines than anyone in his class.”
